Haitian pastor arrested with $95,700 in Haiti airport on his way to America

Port-au-Prince, March 7, 2019.- We are learning of an unusual arrest made in Haiti of a pastor by the Haitian National Police (PNH) on March 6. They detained the pastor at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport who was allegedly in possession of a sum of cash valued at $95, 700 in US currency.

Officials say Estiverne Jean-Charles, who owns and operates a church in Delmas 33, was attempting to board a flight to the United States and found the large amount of money hidden, ($95,700.00) wrapped as a gift. Jean-Charles had no hesitation when asked where the money came from. ”I am a pastor and I can travel with any amount of money”, he explained to Haitian police officers.

PNH proceeded with the arrest and took Jean-Charles in custody for more questioning. According to Haiti law to prevent money laundering and financing of terrorism, it’s a must for them to further investigate any person entering or leaving Haiti territory with $10,000 or more.
