President Barack Obama has ordered to end the ”wet foot dry foot” policy immediately. That policy was established by former president Bill Clinton in 90s for migrants coming from Cuba. It allows Cubans who make it to the United States by sea to gain legal resident. As of now, any Cuban migrants caught trying to enter the U.S illegally will now go through the same process as other immigrants.
The move comes after the two countries have established new diplomatic relations within the last two years. Border patrols will now detain all Cubans and are required to take them to a detention center. Like everyone else, anyone who is affected because of the removal of ‘Wet foot, dry foot’, will have to prove he or she is dealing with a credible threat back in Cuba in order to stay in the United States.
Before, people thought it was unfair to grant legal status to one group of migrants who illegally enter the country the same way.
What do you think of Obama’s decision to immediately end the outdated ‘wet foot, dry foot’ policy?
